Owner of My Adventures Across The World, solo traveler, cat mom to Minnie. Claudia has been featured by the Lonely Planet and the Huffington Post. There are toilets available for visitors to use at the Anne Frank House on the underground floow, as well as one accessible toilet. A free cloakroom is available for visitors of the museum to use. Items such as coats, umbrellas and buggies can be stored for free in the cloakroom, and you can’t take in any backpack either (mine was quite small and I still had to leave it in the lockers).

In order to protect the original items in the museum and to avoid causing nuisance to other visitors, photography is not allowed in the museum. Mr. Voskuijl built the piece of furniture.’ Anne Frank wrote in her diary on 21 August 1942. The experience begins with an image of Anne Frank and a graphic of her signature. The visitor enters a hallway that evokes a street scene from Frankfurt, Germany in 1932.

Instead, keep your phone and cameras put away and really just immerse yourself in the experience. You’ll be able to get some great photos of the exterior and find what you need of the inside on their website. But you won’t be able to get back the experience of touring her secret annex. Like, way earlier than you think you need to, just to be safe. There are places to eat and drink near the Anne Frank House; the scenery is beautiful so walking the neighborhood (but not straying too far) is always an option.

How to get to Anne Frank House

Today, the office features displays of personal items and documents. Taking Anne Frank House photos is not allowed – hence the significant lack of photos of the interiors of the museum in this post. I have inserted the only few photos of the outside area that can be taken and a few generic photos of the surroundings of the house. The museum is a subdued place where each of the rooms feel personal and authentic. You are able to get closer to the life of the diarist through a selection of photographs, quotes, videos and other very personal elements such as pencil lines on the wall measuring the family’s height. Stepping into the Anne Frank House, you're transported back in time and can sense the claustrophobic reality of the hiders in the annex.

After the war, the previous hiding place at Prinsengracht 263 and the neighbouring properties had fallen into disrepair. In 1950, the Berghaus textile factory wanted to buy the houses on the corner of the Prinsengracht and the Westermarkt. Berghaus planned to demolish the buildings and construct a new factory building.Otto Frank struggled when the demolition was announced.

If you have difficulty walking, you may have trouble climbing the steep stairs. From the start of the period in hiding, Otto and Edith Frank marked their daughters’ heights on their bedroom wall. In two years’ time, Margot grew 1 centimetre while Anne grew over 13 centimetres. 'Writing lets me get rid of it all, my sorrow disappears, my courage is revived! It certainly was to me and it was the most touching, interesting place I visited in the city. The Berghaus company abandoned its plans for a new factory building on the corner of the Prinsengracht and in 1957 donated the former hiding place at Prinsengracht 263 to the Anne Frank House organisation. The neighbouring properties were purchased by a property developer. After long negotiations with the organisation, the project developer agreed to sell all properties for 350,000 guilders. The University provided the advance funding and made up the shortage of the Anne Frank House. A committee of prominent citizens of Amsterdam took the initiative to save the building where Anne had written her diary from demolition. The Anne Frank House organisation was established in 1957 and its main purpose was to preserve the hiding place and open it up to the public, and to promote the ideals of Anne Frank in the process.

Inside the Exhibit

Anne Frank is one of the most well-known former residents of Amsterdam. The Anne Frank House at Prinsengracht 263 is where she and her family hid for over two years during World War II. It has now been transformed into a museum with a sobering exhibition on the persecution of Jews during the war and discrimination in general. Here, you can buy The Diary of Anne Frank, the museum catalogue, postcards, or one of our many other publications. Your purchase helps the Anne Frank House conserve the museum and contributes to our (educational) activities. The museum shop keeps the same opening hours as the museum and can only be accessed through the museum.

The Anne Frank House is not easily accessible for the physically disabled and only partly accessible for wheelchairs. Free leaflets in 8 languages are available at the entrance of the museum. Visitors are not allowed to take photographs or to film in the Anne Frank House. The museum recreates the atmosphere and period of the Franks’ experience. Documents and possessions belonging to the eight people who hid here are displayed in the annex, and the front of the house has been restored to its 1940s state.

Another highly rated hotel is the Mr. Jordaan, just a 6-minute walk from the Anne Frank House. It offers a 24-hour front desk along with luggage storage, a continental breakfast, free wifi, all in an amazing location. Besides being the home of the Anne Frank House, the Jordaan is the perfect place to stay in Amsterdam. It’s quiet and scenic, yet within walking distance to phenomenal restaurants, entertainment, attractions, and more. I highly recommend staying in the Jordaan neighborhood of Amsterdam. If Third Reich history is something you’re interested in, check out my article on visiting the NS-Documentation Center, located at the birthplace of the Nazi Party in Munich, Germany.

The website of the museum suggests 10 as the minimum age for visiting the museum, but clarifies that it is up to parents to decide whether their kids are ready for visiting such a place. There’s also a collection of multimedia displays including a newsreel from World War II, an audio recording of Anne’s diary and other personal items. Otto spent much of his time adding to this collection of objects to tell the story of his daughter and the rest of the group that lived together in secret. Following a visit to the annex you can explore other parts of the house. The front of the house showcases a variety of different items from the family’s time living in the annex.
